Generally, chord melody guitar refers to playing jazz guitar with single line melodies or solos and combining or accompanying with chords. This is opposed to just single line soloing or melody playing, or on the flipside only comping in a band with chords. You actually combine the two at the same time, on one guitar.

On one hand, chord melody can refer to a guitarist mixing chords and melody on a tune in a band setting, e.g a jazz trio of guitar, bass and drums. In this setting, you need to take care in what chord voicings you apply to the melody and your solos. If you play too many low notes on the 5th and 6th strings it can interfere with the bass player.
On the other hand, chord melody guitar playing can also refer to playing jazz tunes arranged or improvised on solo guitar. This is kind of like playing as a one man band: soloist, comping and bass all in one.
Sometimes transposing the tune can also give the arrangement a distinct sound or colour, so even if a tune already seems to sit well on the guitar it is still worthwhile playing around and experimenting with different keys.
A jazz chord melody guitar player is a collector of chords. Whenever you learn an existing chord melody arrangement, or transcribe a chord melody or chord solo, add any voicings you find in a dictionary grouped in main chord types.

Hey Robert, I think practising counting aloud and playing music simultaneously gets easier as we practice doing it. Personally, I like to isolate the skill and practice sight reading rhythms. I count aloud, tapping the rhythm. To change it up I might tap a steady beat and vocalise the rhythm. This kind of drill work can be quite fun and definitely improved my own sight reading on guitar.

Or, here is another piece for beginners, an Allegro by Mauro Giuliani. (By the way, I selected both the Sor Moderato and the Giuliani Allegro from Charles Duncan's excellent graded anthology of easy to intermediate solo pieces, A Modern Approach to Classical Guitar Repertoire, Part One.) Example #3:
Many guitarists mistakenly lift the low dotted half note G early, leaving a gap in the bass line. That is not acceptable. The rests on the 3rd beat of measures #2 and 3 apply to the middle voice, not the bass voice. We want to connect the bass line seamlessly. Fortunately, we have two good solutions for transitioning from measure #2 to measure #3.
The opposite approach is to let all the melody notes ring together and hold the accompaniment notes as long as possible, ignoring the rests. Some may say this more resonant sound is more guitaristic. Example #8:
The first example contains a difficult bar chord that causes endless troubles for countless guitarists. But those troubles can be greatly reduced by training the 4th finger to move to its next destination as quickly as possible. Example #11:
In the Let It Be guitar solo, George Harrison uses exclusively notes from the C major pentatonic scale. If you recall, the major pentatonic scale is a 5-note scale built on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th intervals of the major scale.
The solo starts with a double-stop lick in the 5th position of the C major pentatonic scale and lands on the C note on the third fret of the 5th string. Note that this C note is the root of the C major chord being played by the backing rhythm section.
This section of the solo again stays mostly in position 5 of the C major pentatonic scale before transitioning to position 4 with a slide from the 7th fret to the 5th fret on string 5. Again you see the root note C being targeted over the C chord.
Picking up from the A note it landed on in the previous section, the solo continues to build. The solo continues in position 1, landing on the root C of the C major chord on the 8th fret of string 1. It then moves up to position 3 for the final licks, targeting the root G note of the G major scale on the 15th fret of the 1st string and the final lick landing on the key center root C of the C major chord as the final note.

Learning the melody is an important part of studying any jazz standard. Even if you are excited to dive into the solo, take the time to learn the melody, it builds a strong foundation of the form and tune in your ears and fingers that will make soloing easier over these changes.
Have fun learning this Autumn Leaves melody and solo. Study it over the backing track, incorporate licks and ideas from the solo into your own playing, and dig into one of the most famous jazz tunes in the repertoire.
Good answer, those diagrams really helped me understand the arrangement. You can be proud that you are introducing so many musicians to this wonderful genre of guitar music. Thank you, Dirk. You have a cogent way of teaching that really works for me.
Thank you for sharing your in-depth Jazz Guitar knowledge with me. Autumn Leaves happens to be one of my favorite songs, so it is a great place to start. I am an accomplished guitarist, but my journey began with Country Music many years ago. It became a way of earning a living, so I stayed with it. Nevertheless, I like (and play) other types of music. Thanks again!
Thank you for the transcription, I have been seeing this tune mostly in Bb (e.g. Gm leading into the starting Cm) and a few times in G as here. Which is the original version? Also, how do I download the backing track as an audio file, i.e. mp3, etc. Thank you so much!
I still have the one 1969 colour photo of myself and my duo singing partner Chris Bird showing me holding my Hofner Committee and Chris holding the Hofner Beatle guitar with closely matching colour and adornments which I bought in Sydney Australia, and taught her to strum along to some of our songs with.
